Hard to believe but Corky’s Early Bird Tournament will commemorate 40 years this year when play begins May 2 in Owatonna and Faribault.
The tournament has become a staple of the softball circuit in the upper Midwest and will feature a record-breaking 200 teams from 13 states. The states represented at Corky’s this year are: Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Connecticut, Michigan, Arizona, California, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.
The tournament will run from May 2-5 across Owatonna, Waseca and Faribault. Top teams from the B, C, and D divisions will be awarded USA Softball national berths. In addition there will be a hometown tournament May 3-4 from 6-11 p.m.
Of course, the famous pork patties will sizzle on the grill and old timers will gather under the cement tent to reminisce.
The Devon Worley Band will perform a free concert in the park from 8-11:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4. The bandshell will be next to the Steele County Historical Center by Diamond No. 1 at the Fairground Park. If it rains, the band will play under the big top tent. All ages are welcome.
Also on Saturday, May 4, the Long Haul Bombers will compete in a home run derby. Players from each team will compete for $1,000 from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m.
