Minnesota not only boasts a thriving softball environment, it also is developing top-end players.
Case in point, three Minnesotans appear on USA Softball rosters. Joel Cooley of St. Paul and Tyler Bouley of Champlin are on the USA Softball men’s fastpitch team and St. Paul’s Patrick Ellwanger plays on the men’s futures slow pitch national team.
Cooley, a pitcher, had a 3.38 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 18 ⅔ innings in the 2018 Intercontinental Cup. In the 2017 Pan American Championship he finished with a 2.33 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 12 innings as Team USA earned a bronze medal.
Bouley is a catcher and was named the 2014 USA Softball Junior Male Athlete of the Year. He hit .421 with a home run, 11 RBI and scored six runs at the 2014 WBSC Junior Men’s World Championship.
Patrick Ellwanger, of St. Paul, was named to the 2019 men’s futures slow pitch team.
